Andrea Bertello

Director, Country Engagement & Partnerships RELP

Since RELP foundation in 2020, Andrea is responsible for managing the organisation's engagement efforts with host country governments and partners globally. He holds a BA degree in Economics and a MA in Sustainable International Development and he has 20 years of experience working in the renewable energy sector, both as a consultant and as an entrepreneur. From 2005 to 2008 he worked for Trinergy Ltd., a wind energy asset manager based in Dublin and New Energy Finance in London. Since 2008, Andrea has been involved in the creation and development of several businesses spanning from renewable energy project development and consultancy, to digital solutions for energy efficiency (Energy Management Systems) and small-scale renewable energy and hybrid generation systems. At academic level, Andrea taught several renewable energy courses as an adjunct professor at Brandeis University, Waltham MA (U.S.) and at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional - UTN (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Its vast renewable resources and underdeveloped infrastructure present a significant investment opportunity. This opening keynote panel will explore Africa's power and energy needs, its role in the global energy transition, and how to attract investment to drive growth. Experts will discuss financing renewable energy projects, navigating Africa's carbon markets (including the VCM environment), and mobilizing capital at scale. 

Key areas of discussion:

  • What are the most pressing energy challenges facing Africa today? What have been the solutions for mobilising capital at scale?

  • Derisking to attract more capital - what alternatives do we have?

Experts will discuss innovative financing solutions for renewable energy projects, deployment of capital using green bonds, insurance risk, and the role of climate finance in supporting the transition and closing the finance gap that currently exists.  The session will also highlight nature-related risks and opportunities highlighting performance and disclosures as well as impact reporting. 

Key areas of discussion:

  • What are the most promising opportunities for sustainable finance in the African context for transition finance, nature finance or blue finance

  • What innovative financial instruments can be leveraged to accelerate renewable energy deployment? How can blended finance be effectively utilized to mobilize private capital? What role can impact investing play in driving sustainable energy development?

  • How can green bonds be used to finance large-scale renewable energy projects?

  • Type of transition finance instruments, blended finance solutions, and the role of development finance institutions (DFIs) in supporting the transition.
