Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is the landlord of the eight South African commercial seaports responsible for securing production and economic functioning of the national port system. It manages and administers the system on behalf of the state.
As the leading and largest Ports Authority with world-class port infrastructure in the Eastern and Southern hemispheres of Africa, TNPA’s role is to provide port infrastructure and marine-related services including dredging services to the ports of Cape Town, Durban, East London, Mossel Bay, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay and Saldanha.
It operates within the legislative framework provisioned through the National Ports Act of 2005 (Act No. 12 of 2005). This legislation outlines TNPA's core functions, which include:
• Planning, providing, maintaining, and improving port infrastructure.
• Provision or arrangement of marine-related services.
• Ensuring the provision of port services and managing port activities.
• Providing aids to navigation and assistance to vessel that navigates within port limits and along the coast.
Our Mandate
TNPA provides a port system that is seamlessly integrated into the global logistics network that is sustained through the delivery of high levels of service and increasing efficiency for a growing customer base. This enhances South Africa’s global competitiveness, facilitating the expansion of the South African economy through socially and environmentally sustainable port development.
Our Capabilities and Services
TNPA offers services to port users which include terminal operators, shipping lines, ship agents, cargo owners, clearing and forwarding agents.
With its port consultancy and dredging expertise, the Ports Authority is also well-positioned to explore cross-border partnerships with ports and maritime related projects outside of South Africa.
