The discovery was made in the Upper Angwa and Pebbly Arkose formations

Invictus Energy Limited, an independent upstream oil and gas company headquartered in Australia with offices in Harare, has announced a gas discovery in the Mukuyu-2 well at its 80% owned and operated Cabora Basin Priject in Zimbabwe.

The discovery was made in the Upper Angwa and Pebbly Arkose formations, and the company is aiming to confirm a gas-condensate discovery with the follow-up Mukuyu-2 appraisal well. The well will also test additional prospects in the deeper Angwa and undrilled Lower Angwa, which were not penetrated in the Mukuyu-1/ST1 campaign, providing further potential.

“The Mukuyu-2 discovery, 7km away and 450 meters updip of the Mukuyu-1 well, which can subsequently be classified as a discovery, provides confirmation of the large potential of the Mukuyu field which has a structural closure of over 200km square,” Managing Director at Invictus, Scott Macmillan, said in a company statement.

“With additional hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs ahead, the focus now is to complete the drilling and evaluation program and obtain further wireline data including fluid samples to declare an additional discovery from the Lower Angwa formation.”

Invictus Energy, an upstream oil and gas firm, has its focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Its main assets are two promising blocks in Zimbabwe’s Cabora Bassa Basin, one of Africa’s vast and under-explored rift valleys. The firm drilled the Mukuyu structure in late 2022, confirming the presence of hydrocarbons in the basin and boosting the prospects of other targets along the Central Fairway Play.

Earlier this week, the company extended its rig contract with Exalo Drilling for the Exalo Rig 202 by two years to support ongoing and future exploration activity in the Basin.
