Angola advances oil exploration with ExxonMobil’s Likembe-01 well drilling

22 May 2024 | Upstream

The National Agency of Petroleum, Gas, and Biofuels (ANPG) announced a significant stride in Angola’s oil exploration with the successful drilling of the Likembe-01 well in the ExxonMobil-operated Kizomba B development area of Block 15.

This follows a 2022 discovery at the Bavuca South-1 exploration well in the same Block, which encountered 30 meters of hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone.

The Likembe-01 well, drilled from February to April, reached a depth of 3,013 meters in a water depth of 1,200 meters, mirroring the Bavuca South-1 well’s drilling by the Valaris DS-9 rig in 1,100 meters of water. The well’s strategic location, approximately 365 kilometers northwest of Luanda, underscores Angola’s commitment to bolstering its offshore exploration capabilities.

ExxonMobil Angola, leading the Block 15 consortium with partners Azule Energy, Equinor, and Sonangol, continues to pioneer the installation of innovative technology and a multi-year drilling programme. This programme aims to capitalize on the region’s hydrocarbon potential, further evidenced by the high-grade sandstone reservoirs identified in the Likembe-01 well.

The well represents the first drilled under the Incremental Production project’s preliminary agreements, awaiting Executive approval. The project is designed to incentivize the production of additional oil volumes in active concessions, a critical component for the sustainable growth of Angola’s petroleum industry.

The ANPG, under the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas (MIREMPET), is working to secure the Executive’s approval for the project, in line with the country’s sustainable development goals and efforts to improve the operational efficiency of the oil sector.
