Country Spotlight: AOW 2023 to explore benefits of gas and oil & gas offshore development potential in South Africa

This year’s Africa Oil Week (2023) will organize a Country Spotlight on South Africa as the country continues to grow its pipeline of onshore gas exploration and production projects and makes progress on offshore exploration and development programmes.

Since 2019, Total Energies’ discoveries in the Outeniqua Basin have already positioned South Africa as a new exploration frontier and redrew the cards of the country’s energy security scenario. Newly found reserves can support decarbonization and industrialization at home, while encouraging additional exploration in frontier basins to the West (Orange Basin) and to the East (South Outeniqua).

Meanwhile, onshore exploration and development is picking up: South Africa became an LNG producer in 2022 and is witnessing growing exploration for shallow conventional and coal-bed methane (CBM) gas.

To unpack the latest on South Africa’s upstream energy sector, AOW 2023 is welcoming a prestigious lineup of South African institutions and speakers for a Country Spotlight. These include Ntokozo Ngcwabe, Deputy Director General, Mining, Minerals and Energy Policy Development at the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE); Dr. Tshepo Mokoka, COO at the Central Energy Fund (CEF); Dr. Bongani Sayidini, COO at the Petroleum Agency SA; Godfrey Moagi, CEO of the Strategic Fuel Fund; and Sandisiwe Ncemane, Interim CEO at PetroSA

The Country Spotlight will address current opportunities and challenges of further exploring offshore while showcasing the benefits that new production can have to expand the country’s midstream and downstream infrastructure. While South Africa is one of the continent’s largest downstream and refining hub, production offshore has remained historically very low and the country continues to rely on gas imports from Mozambique.

In light of continued onshore gas exploration, the panel will also give the outlook for South African natural gas and what it means for the future of the country’s energy mix in industry, power, and transport.
