Africa Oil Week (AOW) 2023 will welcome one of its highest ever numbers of financiers as African energy markets continue to generate interest from across the world

This year, our investors and private sector-led programme will support strong business and dealmaking with a Finance and M&A Forum featuring key bankers, traders, equity investors and financial advisors.

The response to this year’s programme demonstrates renewed interest for the African upstream and gas sectors as several greenfield and brownfield FIDs have been taken this year and are expected to be approved in 2024. The pipeline of African projects is growing and most operators and asset owners are on the look out for attractive deals to access debt and equity capital while structuring projects that align with the world’s best ESG practices and requirements.

This year’s Finance & MA Forum will be opened by Thomas Bethel, Partner at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP and will offer several high-level discussions around the financing of African upstream, the ways and opportunities of raising debt for energy projects, how to structure futureproof deals, and the outlook for African M&A in 2024.

The programme at AOW 2023 is joined by an impressive lineup of financiers, bankers, and investors from the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Afreximbank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), Deutsche Bank, Absa, Standard Bank, and Standard Chartered among others.

Finance executives will be joined by private sector leaders from some of Africa’s most dynamic independent operators include Aradel Holdings, Oando Plc, Afentra Plc, and Tullow Oil.

To discuss the financing of African upstream, Watson Farley & Williams LLP’s Partner Joe Levin will moderate a panel between Taiwo Okwor, Vice President at the AFC; Danai Koutra, Director - Head of Natural Resource - Finance Team at Deutsche Bank; Heine Melkevik, Senior Advisor at ICA Finance, and Adeola Ogunsemi, Group Chief Financial Officer at Oando Plc.

Conversations around debt will be moderated by Olaniwun Ajayi’s Managing Partner Dr. Tominiyi Owolabi and will welcome Matthieu Milandri, Head of Upstream Finance at Trafigura; Tamoor Ali, Crude Oil Originator at bp Finance; and Anastasia Deulina, CFO of Afentra.

To talk about futureproofing African oil & gas projects, Herbert Smith Freehills LLP’s Partner William Breeze will welcome Mohammed Abdul-Razaq, Senior Vice President Financial Advisory at the Africa Finance Corporation; Brian Marcus, General Manager Commercial & Corporate Finance at Seplat Energy Plc; Heine Melkevik, Senior Advisor at ICA Finance; and Jon Clark, Partner EMEIA Energy and Resources at Ernst & Young LLP.

Finally, the M&A session will be moderated by Paul Morton, Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills and welcome Tom Freije, Director EMEA at Evercore; Stuart Cooper, Director of Strategy, Commercial and Business Development at Tullow Oil; Camillo Atampugre, Director - Resources & Energy at Absa; Xavier Venereau, Head of Producers & Finance at bp; and Adegbola Adesina, CFO at Aradel Holdings Plc.
